are hummingbirds in Carolina.
Hummingbirds are appearing at sugar
water feeders across Columbus County.
North Carolina has four species of
hummingbirds that visit annually.
These species are the Ruby Throated
Hummingbird, the Rufous Hummingbird,
the Green Violet-ear Hummingbird and
the Calliope Hummingbird. Identifying
the Ruby Throated Hummingbird begins
with identifying the male of the
species as it is the most colorful and
easiest to identify. The
prominent feature of the male is its
throat, which is a ruby-red color. The
female Ruby Throated Hummingbird has
an emerald colored back, while the
other features are a white colored
breast, a white colored throat.
